Vacation apartments and villas might seem contrary at first to the whole concept of luxury in that if one wants 5 Star treatment, then hotels offer everything one might need including top class restaurants, bar, spa and wellness facilities and a concierge to help with any special matters.
The vacation rentals market is fast gaining pace though and this includes in the Luxury and High-end 
part of the travel market and this has been happening for many reasons. Vacation apartments and villas offer many added benefits including:
Extra space (the extra space you can gain can be quite significant. This can be especially good for families and groups and these rentals can include mansions and very large accommodation quarters).
Independence (you might not want the bellboy and reception to be there every time you walk in and out. It can be great to have complete independence).
Cost (Especially for large groups and families, the cost can be quite a bit lower than a hotel stay. Even though travelers in the luxury market want the best, everyone still generally wishes to get the best for their money and vacation rentals can often offer this extra value).
Privacy and location (Some holiday rental villas and apartments mean that you have the choice sometimes of better locations. You can for example find a villa literally on the beach in some locations. Add onto this the fact that you will not be sharing that part of the beach with a full hotel full of other guests and the benefits quickly become clear.
